This spring the Office of Community-Based Learning is pleased to offer a series of 3 "CBL Talks" to provide University students with information and insights into major challenges and opportunities facing the Scranton area and how they can be part of positive change. These live sessions will offer opening remarks from speakers followed by Q&A and will also be recorded to serve as a resource for CBL courses.

The How-To Guide to Community-Based Learning Course Designation
Debra L. Fetherman, PhD, MCHES®, Program Director Health Promotion, Department of Health and Human Performance & CBL Faculty Coordinator will lead a CBL Faculty Workshop "The How-To Guide to Community-Based Learning Course Designation" on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 11:30 am - 12:45 pm in The DeNaples Center, room 406.
In this workshop, faculty will be introduced to the CBL course designation process and guided through the completion of the course designation form. Faculty should bring their course syllabi. Key questions and concerns will be addressed. Faculty will leave the workshop with their course designation forms ready for submission.

CBL Faculty Workshop: Practical Assessment Strategies for Community-Based Learning
Debra L. Fetherman, PhD, MCHES®, Program Director Health Promotion, Department of Health and Human Performance & CBL Faculty Coordinator led a CBL Faculty Workshop "CBL Faculty Workshop: Practical Assessment Strategies for Community-Based Learning" on Thursday, March 31 from 11:30 am - 12:45 pm in The DeNaples Center, room 406.
In this workshop, faculty were introduced to practical tools to assess their teaching and student learning within Community-Based Learning (CBL) courses and projects. Tools can be easily adapted across disciplines and approaches to CBL. Faculty will leave the workshop with concrete strategies which can easily be implemented into their teaching practice.
CBL Faculty Fall Workshop on Reflection
Reflection as a Tool for Learning in Experiential, Service, and Community-Based Learning Environments
On Tuesday, November 23 from 11:30 AM - 12:45 PM in Brennan 509, Rose Room, Amy Simolo, M.S., Ed.D., Faculty Development Specialist Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence at The University of Scranton will offer a CBL Faculty Workshop, "Reflection as a Tool for Learning in Experiential, Service, and Community-Based Learning Environments." Workshop Description:
Reflection is the process by which meaning surfaces in human experience. (Jesuit Institute, 2013)
Asking students to reflect on their learning may seem like a straightforward task, but the skill of reflection is one that must be mastered in order to create an effective and transformative learning experience. Reflection allows students to gain a greater understanding of themselves as learners, their perception of the world around them, and the impact their prior knowledge and experiences can have. Reflection in courses which incorporate experiences outside of the classroom allow students to inspect their positionality, their preconceptions, and their impact on the world around them.
In this workshop, we will explore reflection as a pedagogical tool, guided by theory and using practical tools, resources, and opportunities for engaging students in reflection.
This workshop is sponsored by the Office of Community-Based Learning and offered in partnership with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

Spring 2021 CBL Talks
During the Spring 2021 semester, the Office of Community-Based Learning in collaboration with various campus partners,was pleased to offer a series of "CBL Talks." The goal of these CBL Talks is to provide University students with information and insights into some of the major challenges and opportunities facing the Scranton area and how they can be part of positive change.
Each of the CBL Talks was offered as a live session with Q&A during the spring semester. These session were recorded to serve as a resource for CBL courses. For more information please email community@scranton.edu .
Community-Based Learning Faculty Meetings
Individual Faculty Meetings by Appointment
Faculty interested in discussing specific project ideas, identifying potential partners and projects for a specific course, or interested in learning more about CBL/CBR pedagogy in a virtual context are encouraged to schedule an individual meeting with members of The Office of Community Based Learning.
